ARCAS PRESIDENT
Dr. Roberto Monterroso is the president of ARCAS’s board of directors as well as one of the leading astronomers in Guatemala and an accomplished dentist. He’s also working on his birdwatching skills.
ARCAS EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
Miriam Monterroso has been ARCAS’s Executive Director since 1994 and is in charge of policy level activities having to do with wildlife advocacy, having served on the boards of the National Forestry Institute, the National Council of Protected Areas, the IUCN national committee and the association of environmental NGOs.
ARCAS ADMINISTRATIVE DIRECTOR
Colum Muccio has been ARCAS’s Administrative Director since 1995, overseeing almost all of ARCAS’s day-to-day fundraising, public relations and project management activities. He is also an avid explorer of Guatemala and to date has climbed 25 of the 37 volcanoes in the country.
ARCAS FINANCIAL DEPARTMENT
Elizabeth Yanes is ARCAS’s financial department, handling all accounting and reporting functions for the association.
ARCAS PROJECT COORDINATOR
Luisa Ortiz is ARCAS’s project coordinator at the central office, handling logistics and administration of volunteers and project management. She is working on her business administration degree from the San Carlos University.
ARCAS FORESTRY TECHNICIAN / ARCAS DIRECTOR IN HAWAII
Eduardo Merida, originally from Huehuetenango, is an unassuming forestry technician who over the last few years as Director of ARCAS’s Hawaii program has come to love the local parlama sea turtles.
ARCAS VETERINARIAN
Alejandro Morales is a recently-graduated veterinary doctor who assists Fernando in the administration of the Rescue Center in Peten, focusing primarily on the coordination of volunteers and ecotourists.
ARCAS VETERINARIAN; DIRECTOR IN PETEN
Fernando Martinez has worked with ARCAS since 1994 when he interned at the Rescue Center as a veterinary student. As ARCAS’s director in Peten, he is responsible for the administration of the Rescue Center as well as other in situ projects in the region.
ARCAS ENVIROMENTAL EDUCATION DEPARTMENT
Oda Ericastilla is the director of ARCAS’s environmental education department and is also directly in charge of caring for recently-confiscated animals in the central office.
ARCAS SUB DIRECTOR PETEN
Jose Bol or “Chema” is, for those in the know, the shadow director of ARCAS/Peten. Part mechanic, part veterinary technician, part wildlife biologist, and part babysitter for distraught volunteers. If there’s ever an emergency in the Rescue Center, he’s the one to call for.
